India Demands De-escalation After Attack on Oil Tanker Near Oman

(MENAFN) India’s Foreign Ministry has condemned an attack on an oil tanker off the coast of Oman and called for the “immediate de-escalation of tensions” in the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports.

New Delhi also summoned US Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks to formally protest the incident involving the vessel.

Authorities confirmed that three Indian nationals are missing after the attack on the ship, which had a total crew of 24 people.

The Palau-flagged product tanker MT Settebello issued a distress signal on Wednesday after reporting a missile strike on its engine room. The incident occurred around 20 nautical miles northeast of Sohar in the Gulf of Oman, according to reports.

US Central Command stated in a post on X that “U.S. aircraft fired precision munitions into the ship’s engine room after the crew repeatedly failed to comply with directions from American forces.”

India’s Foreign Ministry said it “condemns the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman, earlier today,” adding that 21 Indian crew members had been rescued while three remained missing.

The ministry also warned that repeated attacks on commercial shipping in the region are “deeply worrisome” and a direct consequence of ongoing regional conflict.

India’s Embassy in Oman said it is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with Omani authorities in search and rescue operations. Tracking data from Marine Traffic indicated the vessel was headed to Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, according to reports.
