India Urges Immediate De-escalation as Iran-Israel Conflict Deepens

(MENAFN) India on Monday joined the growing chorus of international voices demanding restraint, calling for an immediate halt to hostilities between Iran and Israel and warning of the conflict's mounting toll on civilians and the global economy.

India's Foreign Ministry expressed "deep regret" over the latest wave of attacks in an official statement, cautioning that the ramifications of the conflict extended well beyond the immediate region.

"These developments are a matter of utmost concern to the international community," the ministry said.

Noting that the conflict "has already caused immense human suffering," the ministry further warned that hostilities had inflicted a "debilitating impact on the global economy and energy supplies."

"We call on all parties to immediately de-escalate tensions, ensure that civilians are not harmed and conclude ongoing negotiations for a diplomatic solution so that peace and stability can return to the region," the statement read.

New Delhi's appeal came in the wake of a dramatic overnight escalation. Iran launched several waves of missiles toward northern Israel late Sunday — its first such strike since a fragile ceasefire took hold in April — following an Israeli airstrike on Beirut's southern suburbs, which Israel said had targeted a Hezbollah command and planning center in Lebanon. Preliminary reports indicate the strike killed two people and wounded 11 others.

Israel has since struck back with what its military described as a "large-scale strike on strategic defense systems" across Iran. Iranian state media reported large explosions and rising smoke plumes over Tehran on Monday.

In a separate development, the Indian Embassy in Tehran issued an advisory urging Indian nationals to refrain from traveling to Iran and calling on those already present in the country to depart immediately, citing the deteriorating security situation on the ground.
