India Criticizes Trump Repost Calling India, China “Hellholes”

(MENAFN) India has criticized US President Donald Trump after he reshared a social media post that described India and China in derogatory terms, according to reports.

The repost, attributed to a US conservative commentator, included claims that immigrants from India were “gangsters with laptops” and made broader negative generalizations about migration and hiring practices involving Indian and Chinese professionals.

In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the remarks were “obviously uninformed, inappropriate, and in poor taste.” He added that such statements do not reflect the nature of India-US relations, which he described as being based on mutual respect and shared interests.

A spokesperson for the US Embassy in New Delhi sought to downplay the controversy, emphasizing positive ties between the two countries and referencing Trump’s earlier comments describing India as a “great country” and highlighting his relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The original post also included broader criticism of US immigration and labor systems, particularly regarding birthright citizenship policies and hiring practices, which have been politically contentious in the United States.

US Representative Ami Bera, a Democrat, condemned the remarks as “offensive, ignorant, and beneath the dignity of the office he holds,” arguing that they misrepresent the contribution of immigrant communities to the United States.

The diplomatic exchange comes ahead of a planned visit by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to New Delhi, as both sides seek to manage tensions amid wider geopolitical strains.
