Maersk Pauses Key Middle East Shipping Routes
The Danish firm stated that it has suspended the FM1 service connecting the Far East to the Middle East and the ME11 service linking the Middle East to Europe, citing safety concerns for its vessels and crews.
This decision follows the US- and Israeli-led military operations against Iran, now in their seventh day, which have caused significant interruptions to maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital shipping bottlenecks.
The strait, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, typically handles roughly 20% of global oil and gas shipments.
Container shipping operators have mostly stopped transiting the waterway since US and Israeli attacks on Iran began on Feb. 28, redirecting vessels around the Cape of Good Hope at Africa’s southern tip instead.
Maersk also reported that its regional shuttle operations within the Persian Gulf are suspended until further notice.
Additionally, the company said its ME1 service connecting the Middle East with northern Europe will temporarily bypass calls at Jebel Ali, one of the largest ports in the United Arab Emirates, while continuing scheduled stops in India and Oman.
