India reveals statue of Lionel Messi amid tour to country
Messi, captain of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning team, began his so-called “GOAT tour” in Kolkata on December 13. Crowds at the Salt Lake Stadium expressed frustration over his brief appearance, with some throwing ripped-up seats and invading the pitch as Messi, alongside Inter Miami teammates Luis Suarez and Rodrigo De Paul, was escorted out. Reports indicate that Messi was tightly cordoned throughout his lap of the stadium, preventing fans from getting a clear view.
On Sunday, Messi visited Mumbai, exchanging jerseys with Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, and made an appearance in Hyderabad. On Monday, he arrived in New Delhi, where security measures have been significantly heightened.
The All India Football Federation clarified that it was not involved in organizing the event in Kolkata. The city has a history of hosting football icons, including Pele and Diego Maradona.
The tour comes as India prepares to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and explores the possibility of bidding for the Summer Olympics.
