India refutes claims of using territory to damage Bangladesh

(MENAFN) India has rejected claims from Bangladesh that its territory is being used for activities harmful to the neighboring country.

On Sunday, Bangladesh summoned India’s high commissioner to Dhaka, Pranay Verma, to raise concerns over ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina allegedly making continued “incendiary” statements from Indian soil.

“We have consistently reiterated our position in favor of free, fair, inclusive, and credible elections being held in Bangladesh in a peaceful atmosphere,” the Indian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. The ministry emphasized that India has never permitted its territory to be used for actions contrary to the interests of the people of Bangladesh.

Dhaka also renewed its demand for the extradition of Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who were sentenced to death by a Bangladeshi court in a crimes against humanity case. They were found guilty of ordering a violent crackdown on student protests in 2024. Hasina, who fled to India following the unrest, described the verdict as a “foregone conclusion” in a recent interview.

Bangladesh is currently governed by an interim administration led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mohammad Yunus. The country is scheduled to hold elections in 2026, with Hasina’s Awami League, which held power for 15 years before the uprising, barred from participating.
