India ruling party spokesperson criticizes Western global dominance mindset
“The era of global hegemony, dominance is over,” Jaiveer Shergill said, adding, “That ship has sailed. I think the West needs to be woken up from a deep slumber.” Speaking on a weekly podcast focused on India’s relations with Russia and broader global affairs, he was sharply critical of what he referred to as the collective West.
He further stated, “The West has a single power dominance hangover,” emphasizing his view that global power dynamics have shifted significantly. He also argued that India does not position itself as a global instructor on governance, nor does it accept external validation in that regard. Shergill, who also practices law before India’s Supreme Court, framed India’s approach as independently driven rather than externally guided.
Referencing a well-known Bollywood film to underline his point, he said, “India-Russia friendship is not hostage to weather patterns. India-Russia friendship is an all-weather friendship.” He noted that India continued importing approximately 2.3 million barrels of Russian oil per day even while, as he put it, Western governments were “sermonizing” against such purchases.
The remarks come in the context of ongoing Western sanctions targeting Russian energy exports. According to reports, the United States previously imposed tariffs of up to 50% on certain Indian imports, with part of those measures linked to India’s oil trade with Russia. These were later reduced following a trade agreement reached earlier this year.
Shergill also accused Western countries of inconsistency, claiming that those who criticized India’s Russian oil imports were indirectly purchasing refined products originating from the same source through intermediaries.
He concluded that India’s energy policy is primarily focused on diversification, with the country now sourcing crude oil from around 40 different suppliers to reduce reliance on any single provider.
